Indian Stone Paintings
by Sheila Montana

Petroglyphs carved on the face of stone are a legacy to modern man. They are an integral link to the culture and art of an earlier people, the native Americans, for whom I feel a deep empathy. I attempt to convey the spirit of the Indian through this art form.

Hopefully, my stone paintings will help to insure, the appreciation of Indian art. Gathering the ideal stones for my art takes me on journeys to different mountain ranges in California and Utah, to Indian trails in Arizona and New Mexico and to desert areas throughout the western part of the United States.

These stone paintings are a tribute to the late David Villasenor, my dear friend and mentor, who was a noted Indian sandpainter and a great influence upon my life. This wonderful man touched my heart with his wisdom, deep love, and understanding of the ways of Indian culture. I will forever be grateful to him!

Sheila Montana's unique stone paintings are displayed today in many prestigious art collections throughout various areas of the world.
